@scottalanmiller said in Infrastructure Needed for Hypervisor Cluster:

Clustering is done when the cost of clustering is low versus the risk of not clustering.

I would change that slightly to Clustering is done when the cost of clustering is low versus the cost of not clustering. A risk is always a cost, but some costs are not risks. For example taking down a hypervisor for maintenance vs moving guests to another node and taking down a free node for maintenance.

Sure, using risk cost vs investment cost as cost v cost is a perfect valid way to look at it. I use that all the time in the opposite way.

You can say that risk is a cost. Or conversely, you can look at the clustering cost up front as essentially a "financial event" similar to an outage.

The thing with this network is that it's focused on the gadgets, not the tech. From a tech side, it's pretty weak and the author doesn't really even know the stuff that he has...

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed, there were a few times were I was like "..that's not what that means/does/is"

Definitely someone not very familiar with it. Appears not to have learned to much on that side of things even after having installed and presumably used it.

Sounds like I should have read the entire thing instead of just glancing at a few highlights.

      Logging, like Graylog2?

      This. Maybe Sexilog.

Interesting package. can it easily monitor more then VMWare? Or did they only setup listeners for VMWare?

Only VMware last time that I looked at it.

      Windows, Veeam, SNMP and more.

The whole crux of my ask was - the desire to buy as few Windows Server CALs as possible.

This is unrelated to the question asked, though.

you know i have noticed you and dash really communicate differently. not good or bad, just different. then you both have trouble understanding the other. from the many threads i have read with you two, that is the common theme i have seen.

I'd assume part of it is that I am highly literal. That tends to be a root of many communications issues for me in general.

yeah i think your right you are literal. i had to adjust my communication with you. that was my fault though, i am used to having to be so unliteral with my users because i would lose them that i got into that bad habit lol. i know for me, i was not explaining my thoughts in a well laid out way and that made me harder to understand and threw you off. did i do better that time?

The more often you are forced to rebuild, the more you will be encouraged to automate.

Can you sysprep before adding the trial license? That way you could just clone and add the license automatically.

So I decided to upgrade. :). Weekend project while I’m sick. Vms created, moving all data now. This is MUCH quieter than the r710.

I have an R710 and its pretty quiet.

That's what I thought too. but the R630 is even quieter! now I just have to upgrade my network switch to a fanless one, and I'll be all set.

We already have lots of colo servers at work for testing where I can run whatever I want but having some stuff on the home LAN is nice.
So I'm thinking about building something around this supermicro chassis for SOHO use:
      alt text

It's roughly 10" in all dimensions. It has 4x3.5" hotswap (SAS/SATA) and two internal 2.5". Takes micro-itx sized motherboards of which Supermicro has a couple of serverboards that fits. Can't go crazy because there are thermal restrictions but that wasn't the intention either. More along the lines of a small Xeon CPU and maybe 64GB RAM or so and a couple of drives.

I know a guy who built his own blade unit. Wooden blade enclosure and some simply power supplies and his own fans, then made it allow straight motherboards to slide in so that it make having a handful of systems running in a cluster super cheap. Pointless for production, but for a lab was very interesting.

I wasn't sure whether you were referring to a lot of learning starting to move toward Googling and boards, or any change in what's available in books, or maybe if your experience just got to a point where that wasn't as necessary.

Oh no, I think that learning has gotten harder. Google is good for fixing things, it is not good for learning. There are many fewer IT books today and the lack of physical book stores has made learning about and sampling IT books much harder.
